Scouting Report: Carey enters his senior year largely as an unknown quantity despite this being his fifth year in the Kansas program. What is known about Carey is that he is big and can fill space in the lane. Carey saw most of his minutes last year during the weeks that Drew Gooden missed because of a wrist injury. During this time, Carey provided fans with so-so results. At his best, Carey plays great defense and hits with accuracy from the paint. Carey also has a pretty turn-around jumper that is effective from 10 feet. At his worst, Carey seems lost on the court, possibly due to the small amounts of PT he has received in his time as a Jayhawk. With Eric Chenowith gone, look for Carey to be given the opportunity to step up and play 10 minutes a game.

Carey has shown the ability to defend in the post and the potential to be an effective rebounder, particularly on the defensive end, despite battling nagging injuries

Possesses good strength and has developed a soft shooting touch in and around the paint

Redshirted the 1997-98 season, but gained experience and confidence by learning the Jayhawk scheme and practicing daily against first team All-American Raef LaFrentz

Was considered a "sleeper" out of Camdenton (Mo.) High School

A three-time first team academic All-Big 12 selection

His dad, Ray, was a standout player at the University of Missouri, earning first team all-conference honors in 1964

Can work at the four or five positions

Gives Kansas depth in the frontcourt

Sophomore Season (1999·00)
Came off the bench to see action in 24 games... Missed the final seven games of the year due to a broken finger on his shooting hand... Averaged 1.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game... Shot a solid 60 percent from the field... Hit 50 percent of his free throws... Dished out 10 assists and swatted four shots... Named first team academic All-Big 12 for the second straight year... Also earned the Ken Koenigs Team Academic Award... Scored a season-high seven points on 3-of-3 shooting at Middle Tennessee State... Also pulled down three rebounds in that game... Played a career-high 17 minutes against Princeton on Feb. 22, scoring two points and grabbing three boards... Ripped down a season-high five boards against Colorado on Jan. 8... Dished out a career-high three assists on Jan. 22 at Missouri... Averaged 5.5 minutes per game.

Freshman Season (1998·99)
Played in 26 games, averaging 5.5 minutes per contest... Averaged 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game... Shot 53.3 percent from the field overall and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) in Big 12 games ... Shot 61.5 percent from the free throw line... Played in all five postseason games including both NCAA Tournament contests... Had one double-digit rebound game... Was named first team Academic All-Big 12 for his performance in the classroom... Played a career-high 15 minutes and scored three points Nov. 21 against Fort Hays State... Gave KU a huge lift off the bench by scoring six points and grabbing six rebounds in just six minutes of action against UNLV in the Tip-Off Classic Nov. 30... In his first Big 12 Conference game against Texas A&M, Carey scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and had one steal... Was a key factor in two early February Kansas victories when he came off the bench for six points in eight minutes at Kansas State on Feb. 1, then grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and scored five points Feb. 7 at Colorado... Went 2-of-2 from the field for four points and snatched three boards in a losing effort at Texas Tech... Saw action in every postseason game including two minutes against defending NCAA champion Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Redshirt Season (1997·98)
Opted to redshirt prior to the start of freshman season... Practiced and traveled with the team... Received five stitches to his upper lip after a collision in practice... Carey also broke a bone in his right hand in a pick-up game prior to the start of preseason practice.

High School
Camdenton (Mo.) High School, 1997... Led Camdenton to an 18-9 record as a senior... Earned two letters for the Lakers... Had single-game highs of 34 points, 19 rebounds, eight blocked shots and eight assists... Earned all-state and all-district honors and was nominated for McDonald's All-America... A good student, Carey earned a 4.039 grade-point average as a senior... Named to the all-state Academic team and was ranked in the top 10 percent of his graduating class.

Personal
Missed his sophomore season of high school because of a kneecap injury... Hobbies include golf, hunting and fishing... Carey's superstition: making all shots in warm-ups means he won't shoot well in the game... Carey has a sister and a cousin who attended KU.
