Editorial Content- squawks from the staff

The Jayhawk Squawk Box was created to give KU fans another site for their enjoyment and entertainment. We believe that cyberspace is vast enough that there is room for us and a several other sites who strive to bring the best information to you. So make room for the new kid on the block, because we don't plan on moving out anytime soon. In fact, we may well become the neighborhood bully.

Opening thought: It's become a time-honored tradition in Northeast Kansas. Every spring the University of Kansas men's basketball team finishes the season ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation, but continually makes an early exit from the Big Dance. Up to the present, the staff at Jayhawk Squawk Box stands firmly behind Roy Williams and the job he has done since arriving at Kansas after the 1988 season. Roy Williams has done nothing but continue Kansas' dominance on the nationwide scene. From 1991-1993, Roy led the team to 2 Final Fours. And in the 8 years since has guided his team near the top of the polls almost every year. For those who whine about the tournament disappointments, consider this, in order for Kansas to lose as a 1 seed, they first have to outplay 310 + teams throughout the regular season and conference tournaments. There is nothing wrong with Kansas basketball and nothing wrong with Coach Williams. Even Duke went 9 years without winning a title and Missouri is still waiting for their first trip to the Final Four. Coach Williams has obtained this high standard of excellence at Kansas while recruiting players who are not only outstanding on the court, but are also exceptional students and citizens. To anyone who wants to moan about Roy as KU's coach, we offer this advice, "shut up...and enjoy the ride." If one thing holds true in college basketball, it's that if a team is among the nation's elite long enough, their day does come, despite any past misfortune. And when it comes, do you want to be one of the fans who said "I told you so", or do you want to get run over by the Roy Williams bandwagon?

What are your thoughts on phog.net and rockchalk.com? -S.R. - Wichita, KS

We think that rockchalk and phog provide a valuable resource for KU fans. They are a place that fans can gather and express thoughts and concerns about the Jayhawks. However, it seems as if rockchalk has died down a bit and phog consists of a group of about 10 people who post several times a day about topics such as their pets, three-headed monsters, and Larry Brown.

Who do you think has the true recruiting scoop, Eric Bossi or Shay? -L.S. - Lincoln, NE

It would seem that Eric is a better evaluator of talent, but Shay is making some serious inroads in the internet recruiting world. They both are new and hopefully upcoming in the recruiting business, any success that they have is success for KU fans.

How long has this site been in operation? - R.M. - Overland Park, KS

The site's formal launching is September 1st. We have put it up on tripod until then in order to draw some traffic and get feedback. We are improving the site everyday, and currently have the infrastructure of it up, the backbone. The most significant improvement you will notice will be in the "Current Recruits" section. We believe that through our connections and insight we can provide KU fans with the most current and accurate recruiting information available anywhere.

I want 'The Squawk' to open it's site NOW! I thought it was opening June 1, what's up with the delay? - J.T. Des Moines, IA

While the original plan was to open Jayhawk Squawk Box on June 1st, things have changed. Namely, the chief operator and designer of the site decided to enroll in 11 hours of summer school. Things should calm down quite a bit around the beginning of August when we are all back at KU. So look for the Squawk Box to take the world by storm and end  the tyranny of Phog.net in September.
