Ben Miller is the newest member of the Kansas basketball coaching staff, now entering his second season as a full-time Jayhawk assistant coach.
Miller, 32 (born Sept. 26, 1968) filled a vacancy on the staff when Matt Doherty departed after the 1998-99 season to take the head coaching position at Notre Dame.
His main duties include supervising KU's preseason strength and conditioning programs, coordinating off-season individual workouts and assisting with on-campus recruiting. In addition, Miller directs the Roy Williams summer basketball camp, the KU coaches clinic and KU's youth holiday skills clinic.
While Miller is new to the coaching staff, he is no stranger to the Kansas basketball program. He worked for four years in a variety of roles including video coordinator and equipment manager. His first association with Kansas basketball came between 1992 and 1995 while pursuing a doctorate degree from KU in sport and counseling psychology. During that time, Miller assisted in the Roy Williams Basketball Camp and served as an assistant coach for the Jayhawk junior varsity team under current Florida State head coach Steve Robinson.
Miller earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Luther (Iowa) College in 1991. In 1992 he completed the master's program in health and physical education at Northern Iowa University. In 1995 he earned his doctorate from the University of Kansas.
As an undergraduate at Luther College, Miller earned three varsity letters in basketball. As a senior, he served as a team captain.
Miller was born in Springfield, Ohio. He attended Worthington High School in Ohio for three years before graduating from Cedar Falls High School in Iowa.
The son of a respected and highly successful college coach, Miller grew up in a basketball family. His father, Eldon Miller, served as a college head coach for 36 years at Wittenberg, Western Michigan, Ohio State and Northern Iowa. He retired from coaching after the 1997-98 season.
Miller is married to the former Heather Hirt. The couple had its first child, Betsie, last October.
